Bio
Alessandra Ferrario is a Technical Officer in information systems for health at the WHO Regional Office for Eastern Mediterranean in Cairo, Egypt. In her role, she provides technical advice to countries on how to strengthen their data collection systems and make greater use of routinely collected data and survey data to inform decision-making. Further, she contributes to monitor progress on the health and health-related Sustainable Development Goals.
Following her interest in applied research, she is conducting a study on integrating snake bites data into routine health information systems. Alessandra is very committed to improve communication effectiveness by making greater use of storytelling, in her writing and oral presentations.
Before joining the WHO, she was a Senior Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School where she led studies on the quality and intensity of care for metastatic cancer patients with particular focus on palliative care. Alessandra worked extensively on access to medicines issues. Her PhD investigated issues and solutions to facilitate access to high-cost medicines in Europe. Examples of her global work in this area include studies on access to essential pediatric chemotherapies and on the uptake of essential antineoplastic medicines in countries working towards universal health coverage.
Alessandra holds a Bachelor in molecular biology and a Masters in epidemiology from the University of Basel and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute; a Masters in health policy, planning and financing from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a PhD from London School of Economics and Political Science. Having studied and worked in the higher education system of three different countries (Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States), she has first-hand experience of the strengths and challenges of the respective systems and the broader international higher education environment.
