Abdullah Ahmad is currently holding the position of Regional Climate Change Specialist with the UNDP Regional Hub in Amman, Jordan. Ahmad hails from Bangladesh. He has more than 16 years of experience in the environmental sector, which is mostly focused on climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and locally led actions. He started working for UNDP in 2004 while he supported the implementation of a GEF funded biodiversity management project in Ecologically Critical Areas in Bangladesh. Later, he worked on some other UNDP projects on Biodiversity and Climate Action. He also worked for UNCDF for two years to establish a local level climate finance mechanism and support locally led climate change adaptation measures in Bangladesh. Ahmad has the experience of working closely with government (at national and local levels), NGOs, universities, experts, local communities, and other stakeholders at different levels for planning and implementing solutions to address climate change and biodiversity loss.
Currently, Ahmad’s work with the UNDP Regional Hub in Amman focuses on climate policy. He supports several countries in the Middle East and North Africa with the development and implementation of the National Determined Contribution (NDC) and Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS). During 2014–15, Ahmad was a Commonwealth Scholar at the University of Cambridge, UK, from where he obtained his M.Phil. degree in Conservation Leadership. He also participated in the Fulbright Hubert Humphrey Fellowship on Natural Resources Management at Cornell University, USA. He also holds a B.Sc. and a M.Sc. degrees in Botany.
