Amal has 20 years of experience in climate change, energy and environment programming, supporting the development and oversight of over $100 million of initiatives through assignments across numerous agencies such as FAO, UNDP, UNEP, UNICEF, UNOPS, WHO and the World Bank, with extensive experiences programming with Vertical Funds and bilateral donors. Through her work with these and other agencies, she has supported programming activities in over 30 countries globally across Africa, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, South-West Asia, and the Pacific, with strategic results in particular in the Arab region.
Amal comes to UNDP from the UNOPS Regional Hub in Amman where she served as Head of the Programme Management Unit, leading, managing and advising on strategic country initiatives funded by KfW. Prior to this she served with the FAO Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa in Cairo as Regional Technical Advisor managing development of new large scale GEF regional and country programming on climate change and related topics. Amal served in leadership positions as Managing Director of ESTIMADA for Environment, a regional consultancy firm where she led strategic planning and provision of advisory support to donors and government to advance action on climate change, energy and the environment. Prior to this, she was Director for Sustainable Development at the Amman Institute for Urban Development, leading business development and technical management of programming across energy, climate and environment areas. Amal started her UN career with UNDP Country Office in Jordan, serving in various roles including as Head of the Climate Change, Energy and Environment Team and Programme Analyst. Amal holds a PhD in Water and Environmental Engineering from the MIST/MIT, an M.S. in Environmental Science and Management from the University of Jordan, and a B.S. with honors in Earth and Environmental Sciences from the Hashemite University of Jordan.
