I am a pharmacist who holds PhD in Industrial Pharmacy and a master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Technology. I have more than 20 years of experience in the areas of pharmaceutical regulations, pharmaceutical and medicine policy, selection and rational use of essential medicines, and supply chain management.
I am a Technical Officer in the Access to Medicines & Health Technologies unit in the World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office since January 2016, responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating WHO collaborative programmes on essential medicines and pharmaceutical policies. I have been technically supporting the eastern Mediterranean countries to:
• Formulate, update, implement and monitor comprehensive national pharmaceutical policies.
• Ensure the availability of medicines and health products at fair and affordable prices in both the public and private sectors.
• Establish efficient supply systems to ensure the flow of quality essential medicines and health products on a regular basis and in sufficient quantities to all levels of the distribution chain.
• Strengthen national regulatory authorities to ensure the quality, safety and efficacy of medicines and health products.
• Ensure the appropriate use of medicines by health professionals and consumers.
• Promote research and development and the local production of quality medicines and vaccines that meet public health needs.
Prior to working in WHO, I worked for over a decade for the Jordan Food and Drug Administration the regulatory authority responsible for ensuring the safety and efficacy of medicines and health products in Jordan, before that, I worked for the Procurement and Supply Directorate, which is responsible for the selection, quantification, product specification, pre-selection of suppliers and adjudication of tenders and procurement of medicines for the public sector.
