Bio
Mazen Malkawi, Regional Advisor on Environmental Health, at the World Health Organization (WHO), Regional Center for Environmental Health Action (CEHA). He holds:
• M.Sc. in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering from the Jordan University of Science and Technology (1988), and
• B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Jordan (1985).
Mr. Malkawi started his career as a Hydrologist and Monitoring Engineer at the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, (1985-1987). Then he spent some time as a teaching assistant at the Jordan University of Science and technology (1987-1988) in different water and environmental engineering subjects
Mr. Malkawi has served since 1988 at different positions in the WHO Centre for Environmental Health Action (CEHA):
Technical Assistant (1988-2011): Coordination of the regional health and environment information program, and managing the activities of the environmental health information network
Technical Officer (2012-2017): Coordinating several regional programs related to monitoring and controlling exposures to environmental risk factors in the 22 countries of the Region, including Monitoring the health impacts of air pollution on health, and the safe use of treated wastewater in Agriculture as an adaptation measure in the face of climate change.
Regional Advisor (2018-Present): Managing the environmental health exposures program focusing on climate change, air pollution, chemical safety, the Arab Strategy and Framework of Action on Environmental Health 2017-2030, and the regional environmental health component of the International Health regulations IHR (2005) treaty.
Mr. Malkawi is an active member in several international committees and task forces that are currently working on updating international guidance and standards on climate change and health, air quality, toxic chemicals, sand and dust storms, urban environment and transport and health. He participated in 100++ International, regional and national meetings on different environmental health aspects, and published 21 articles and chapters in refereed journals and books.
