Bio
Theodora Castan is the regional programme specialist on gender-based violence at the Arab States Regional Office. Previously, she has represented the Delegation of the European Union and the Permanent Missions of Ireland and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the United Nations in New York and in Geneva. In those capacities, she specialized on the consideration of human rights and gender issues in intergovernmental processes. Amongst others, she was the gender expert to support Ireland's chairing of the Commission on the Status of Women in 2018 and 2019, she negotiated on behalf of the EU, Ireland and the UK in the Human Rights Council and in the Third Committee of the General Assembly as well as acted as the penholder on WPS in the Security Council. Theodora has also worked at the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, where she coordinated the portfolios on gender equality and children and armed conflict for the provinces in the central region of Afghanistan. She is an attorney-at-law in the State of New York. She received her LLB from Trinity College Dublin and her LLM from the University of Edinburgh, and is currently undertaking her PhD in Law at the University of Edinburgh.
