Bio
I am a social demographer with more than 30 years of research experience in both international organizations and academic institutions. I received my Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1991. I am currently Chief of the Demographic and Social Statistics Section of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA) in Beirut, Lebanon. Formerly I was Professor and the founding Director of the Center for Research on Population and Health at the American University of Beirut (2000-2008), and served on the faculty of Syracuse University, Birzeit University and Yale University. I was a co-founder and vice President of the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, a Research Coordinator at Fafo (Norway), an elected Council member of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) from 2010-2013, an Advisory Board member of Applied Health and Development Research Network (AHEAD), and a founding member of the Arab Council of Social Sciences and the Middle East Health Policy Forum.
My current work revolves around Arab demography, forced migration/refugees, poverty and domestic violence. I have published extensively on these topics, and my work appeared in Population Studies, the Lancet, Population, Journal of Population Research, Social Forces, Sociological Forum, Social Science Research, Social Science and Medicine, American Journal of Public Health, Health Policy and Planning, International Migration, and Economic Development and Cultural Change among others. I co-edited (with I. Nuwayhid, S. Jabbour and Rita Giacaman) a book entitled Public Health in the Arab World for Cambridge University Press (2012), a Special issue of the journals Violence Against Women on Gender Based Violence in the Middle East (2013) and Global Public Health on Violent Conflict and Population Health in the Middle East and North Africa (2011). I also served on the Editorial Board of the volume, Handbook of Asian Demography, (Routledge, 2018).
