Bio
Dr Sebeh started his medical career in psychiatric studies but moved to Public Health and Rehabilitation and focused his work on childhood disabilities. He holds a doctorate in Community-Based Rehabilitation from the Institute of Child Health, University College of London. He has over 30 years of field experience.
Dr. Alaa Sebeh has been the Regional Disability Advisor of UN ESCWA since Mid-May 2019. Before joining ESCWA, he worked as an independent international consultant on disability for nine years. During this period, he provided nearly 60 consultations to various UN agencies, INGOs, and governments in 20 countries. Until August 2010, he held an international post with Save the Children UK as Regional MENA Regional Advisor on Disability & Child Protection since January 2000. His work involves providing consultations and technical assistance at both regional and national levels, mainly to the governmental authorities, to develop national systems & policies as well as best practices promoting the empowerment, non-discrimination, and inclusion of persons with disabilities in mainstream services and policies, particularly in social, education and health services. Dr. Sebeh has been providing consultancy support, mainly on Participatory Evaluation & Planning, Developing National Strategies & Policies, Capacity Building, to the World Health Organization, UNICEF, UNESCO, the World Bank, the Arab League, UNRWA, UNFPA, ILO, Mission East, NFU, NAD and other agencies in several MENA countries and worldwide in the fields of disability and child protection. He worked in 20 countries, among them Morocco, Macedonia, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Sudan, Armenia, Zanzibar..etc. Dr. Sebeh is specifically supporting the disability works of the World Health Organization in EMRO. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Global CBR Network. Before joining ESCWA, he joined the international consultancy teams of EENET-CIC and ‘Family for Every Child’ based in the UK in 2012.
