Bio
Youssef Chaitani is a Project Coordinator at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. Chaitani's focus areas are the political and development challenges of Arab countries in transition, including the governance deficit in the Arab world and the root causes as well as the spillover effects of conflicts. He has worked on a number of related studies for his organization, including The Governance deficient and conflict relapse. (E/ESCWA/ECRI/2011/1); Trends and Impacts in Conflict Settings: The Socio-Economic Impact of Conflict-Driven Displacement in the ESCWA Region, Issue No.1 (E/ESCWA/ECRI/2009/2); Unpacking the Dynamics of Communal Tensions (E/ESCWA/ECRI/2009/5); Lebanon’s Rebuilding and Revival: A Policy Paper with Initiatives, (UN ESCWA, December 2006) and Report of the Secretary-General on the economic and social repercussions of Israeli occupation on the living conditions of the Palestinian people in the occupied Palestinian territory, including Jerusalem, and of the Arab Population in the Occupied Syrian Golan. (Annual Publication mandated by resolutions from the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council). During his over 22-year career with the United Nations, he has organized numerous conferences and missions catering to the aforementioned themes. Dr. Chaitani has published two books: Dissension Among Allies: Ernest Bevin's Palestine Policy Between Whitehall and the White House, 1945-47, London: Saqi Books, September 2000 and Post-Colonial Syria and Lebanon: The Decline of Arab Nationalism and the Triumph of the State, London: I.B. Tauris, 2007. Dr. Chaitani received his PhD in 2004 from the University of London, where he studied Political Sociology and his MA in Modern Middle Eastern History in 1997 from the American University of Beirut.
