Bio
Prior to appointment at ESCWA, Dr. Salma Al-Nims served as the Secretary General of the Jordanian National Commission for Women from 2014-2022. During her tenure she led the development and adoption of Jordan’s first and Second National Action Plans for Women, Peace and Security. The first plan was sighted as best practice in the UN Secretary General reports on WPS Agenda for its participatory approach, strong monitoring and evaluation frameworks, implementation through a joint fund, and for having an outcome tackling the role of women in PVE. She also led the nationwide participatory process for the development of the National Strategy for Women in Jordan (2020 -2025) with its full alignment with SDG5 and other relevant SDG targets.
Dr. Al-Nims holds a PhD. in Development Planning (2004) and a MSc. in Sustainable Development (1998) from University College London, University of London.
She has more than 20 years’ experience in the areas of Gender and development. She provided professional development and gender consultancy services to several government and international organisations. Those included: the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, Ministry of Social Development, Ministry of Education, UNDP, UNWomen, UNFPA, UNICEF and CIDA.
Dr. Al-Nims was as a member of the Advisory Group to the High-Level Task Force on Financing for Gender Equality for the United Nations. She also served on the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Women Empowerment and co-chaired the “National Committee on Pay Equity” with the SG of the Ministry of Labour and the “Gender Partners Coordination Group” with the EU Ambassador to Jordan and UN Women Country Representative in Jordan.
In 2019, She received Said Foundation Outstanding Achievement Prize, which is awarded to individuals judged to have contributed significantly to the development of the Arab region.
