Bio
Dina Melhem has 18 years of experience in democratic development, public policy making in countries in transition, and conflict and post-conflict environments. Dina studied law, has a PhD in Public Law from the University Paul Cezanne in France, and has held many positions at the UNESCWA and previously at the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) in the UK. Currently, Dina is the programme management officer leading the National Agenda for the Future of Syria program at UNESCWA. Previously, Dina held the position of WFD’s Regional Director MENA and Senior Human Rights Advisor, responsible for providing strategic direction for WFD programming development and design and relationship management in the MENA region, as well as supporting WFD HQ and country offices in integrating human rights into their programmes and activities and developing other key strategic tools. Prior to that, Dina was the Regional Director for MENA and Asia at WFD. Dina advises on strategy and new policy issues and program opportunities in the MENA and Asia regions, and she oversees quality assurance for program delivery.
Dina’s principal field of expertise is supporting parliaments and government institutions as well as CSOs, including expertise in legislative drafting and analysis, financial oversight, public policy evaluation, political and socio-economic analysis, as well as her extensive expertise in rule of law and human rights, conflict resolution, women's empowerment, and gender-based violence. Dina was a Research Fellow at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies and was heavily involved with research on the League of Arab states, international human rights law, and Islam and human rights as part of her doctorate research.
