Over 15 years’ experience in catalyzing Science for Environmental Policy to promote environmental sustainability and support well-informed decision making at national and regional levels.
As Environment Specialist with UNDP Libya. Abdelmenam worked in a joint project with FAO to manage land resources at the national and sub-national levels through the development of a spatially based operational decision support system called the Land Resources Information Management system for Libya (LRIMS). Furthermore, he was overseeing a large program funded by the government on environmental governance tackling key environmental issues such as waste, habitat loss, pollution etc.
He joined UNEP in 2015 as the Regional Science-Policy Interface within the Regional Office for West Asia and was responsible for data and information for decision-making and coordinated the overall delivering of the sixth Global Environment Outlook (GEO-6) Regional Assessment for West Asia in 2016.
In 2019, Abdelmenam assumed the role of the Regional Development Coordination Officer where he succeeded to develop strategic partnerships for the Regional Office with scientific institutions and private sector. In addition, he served as UNEP’s focal point in the region on UN system-wide development work.
Currently, working as the Regional Coordinator and Science Advisor for West Asia Office, responsible for strengthening the Science-Policy Interface and data and information for decision-making as well as integrating environmental dimensions into the UN cooperation mechanisms. Abdelmenam manages the delivery of other key UNEP products and services, which include producing the state of environment reports and providing web-based tools and technologies to support sharing of environmental data and information from national to global levels.
Abdelmenam holds a PhD in Natural Sciences from the Univ. of Lüneburg /Germany, a M. Eng. in Env. Protection with special focus on renewable energies from the Nürtingen-Geislingen Univ. of Applied Science/Germany and a BSc in Env. Studies from University of Sebha/Libya.
