Bio
Julien Le Tellier has joined ESCWA Cluster 5 (2030 Agenda and SDG Coordinator), as Economic Affairs Officer, in October 2022. That position follows his 14-year engagement in the UNEP/Mediterranean Action Plan – Barcelona Convention Secretariat, as Programme Officer in Plan Bleu Regional Activity Centre in Marseille, France (2009–2017) and as Socio-Economic Affairs Officer at the UNEP/MAP Coordinating Unit in Athens, Greece (2017–2022). He was the substantive officer for the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development, the multi-stakeholder advisory body of the Parties to the Barcelona Convention, gathering both government representatives and stakeholders. Julien had a key role in drafting and supporting the implementation of and in monitoring the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development – a regional translation of the 2030 Agenda and SDGs –, in contributing to assessment reports (State of the Environment and Development in the Mediterranean – SoED 2020, First Mediterranean Assessment Report of the Mediterranean experts on Climate and Environmental Changes – MedECC MAR1), in building Science-Policy Interfaces, and in putting in motion flagship initiatives: Environment Friendly City Award; Med Urban Tools; online repository of best practices on waste management; Environmental Governance and Public Participation in Decision-Making; Simplified Peer Review Mechanism of National Strategies for Sustainable Development. Julien brings a substantial background on policy-oriented research projects aiming to bridge the gap between scientists and decision-makers through participatory approaches. He supervised groups of experts and local studies in projects on Sustainable Tourism, testing an innovative methodology to assess the environmental, social and economic footprint of tourism activities in Mediterranean destinations. He also supervised case studies on Urban Mobility in North African and Middle East agglomerations. Julien holds a PhD (2006) from Aix-Marseille University, France, and a post-PhD (2007) in Rabat, Morocco. He authored scientific publications, reports, chapters of reports, and two books. He is married and has three children.
